From the Principal – Term 3, Week 6

Dear Parents and Guardians

National Science Week 2020

Last week, our school celebrated National Science Week. National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres. The theme of National Science Week 2020 was Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans.

At St Benedict’s a number of key events were planned throughout the week to further engage our students in the area of Science.  We invited Scitech to perform various shows focused on Chemical Science, students were invited to meet some scaly friends from the Armadale Reptile Centre, focussed daily science lessons with Mrs Noonan and the week culminated with my Weird and Wacky Science Show.  These activities generated much excitement and engaged our students in the area of Science.  Next year’s theme is Food: Different by Design and we look forward to celebrating this in 2021.

Our winners of the Optional Science Competition were

Junior Award Winners

Year One Blue Curriculum News

Narrative Writing in Year 1 Blue!

In Year 1 Blue we have been learning about Narratives. We have read SO many fairy tales and are enjoying learning about how to write our own interesting stories! Children are so engaged and motivated in their learning that they have begun creating their own books during Investigations using the Book Creator app along with good old-fashioned paper.  Children are then reading them to the class! Here are some of their thoughts.

Oliver- I was so excited!

William- I am proud of my story and excited to read it to my friends.

Allegra- I felt a little embarrassed but I loved my book.

Blake- I enjoyed using the Book Creator app because it is fun, and I got to take my own photos to put in the book.

Book Club News

Issue 6 of Book Club has been sent home this week. All orders must be completed by

Tuesday 8th September to ensure delivery before the holidays.

If you wish to order online, you may use the LOOP system. Please note that if you do use LOOP DO NOT send the order form to school as this will result in a doubling up of orders.

If you do not wish to order online, please send your completed order form with correct money to the class teacher by the due date.

Thank you
Mrs Noonan

Sport News

On a sunny Thursday in August, five speedy St. Benedict’s runners represented our school in the Western Australian Primary Schools Cross Country Championships.

Some would think the experience too overwhelming, with each race having between 260 and 310 competitors.  Our runners took it in their stride, managing to complete the gruelling course.

  • Samuel represented year four finishing 21st out of 264
  • Livina represented year five girls and finished 162nd out of 309
  • William represented year five boys and finished 50th out of 266
  • Lilianna represented year 6 girls and finished 47th out of 310
  • Zac B represented year 6 boys and finished 145th out of 261

Congratulations to our runners for not only finishing and doing so well in their races, but for being brave enough to face the hundreds of other competitors on the starting line.

Lego Club

Lego Club has begun! We have had a steady number of students come to Lego Club and have begun to build some amazing creations. It has been awesome to see people working together to create masterpieces.

If anyone has any Lego that they would be happy to donate, it would be greatly received!
